Premarin, a brand of estrogen-receptor-positive breast cancer drug, is approved for use in menopausal women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer, but little is known about the safety profile of Premarin in menopausal women.

While the drug has been shown to have a good safety profile, there are some safety concerns. A small number of women who are taking it have reported a slight increase in breast and/or cervical cancer risk, which is not statistically significant. It is also possible that the increase in risk could be a result of an increased risk of certain side effects, including hot flushes and vaginal discharge.

The safety profile of Premarin has been reviewed for women, and the drug’s risks and benefits have been reviewed and weighed against its risks and benefits. However, it is not clear that the risks of the drug outweigh the benefits. This review is to determine the risks and benefits of the drug, to consider potential drug interactions, and to provide a more complete picture of the safety profile of the drug.

Risks of Premarin for Menopausal Women

The risks of using Premarin for menopausal women are described below. In general, the risks associated with the use of estrogen for menopausal women are similar to those of the use of estrogen-alone for women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer. However, the risk associated with the use of estrogen-alone in menopausal women is higher than that associated with the use of estrogen for women with hormone receptor-positive breast cancer.

For women who are not taking estrogen for menopausal women, the following factors may be associated with increased risk:

  • Concurrent use of other hormone therapy, such as tamoxifen, with Premarin (or estrogen-alone) for menopausal women (including women who are not taking estrogen for menopausal women)
  • Age between menopause
  • Previous history of breast cancer
  • Breast cancer risk
  • History of previous breast cancer
  • Miscarriage or childbearing potential
  • Inability to breast-feeding during menopause
  • Current smoking
  • Breast-feeding

The risk of breast cancer is greatest in women who are receiving estrogen for menopausal women. For women who are receiving estrogen for menopausal women, the risk is greater than that of taking estrogen alone, and women taking estrogen for menopausal women have a lower risk of breast cancer.

The following are the most common risk factors for breast cancer in women who are taking estrogen for menopausal women:

  • Oestrogen-only women
  • Concurrent use of estrogen for menopausal women
  • Smoking
  • History of prior breast cancer
